explore how chiropractic care can be beneficial in alleviating symptoms and discomfort

acid reflux (gerd)

According Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) (also known as acid reflux) is a digestive disorder consisting of reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. The acid reflux occurs as a result of transient relaxations of the lower esophageal sphincter or when the sphincter tone adapts inadequately to changes in abdominal pressure, according to the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.

signs and symptoms of acid reflux in infants and children

  • Frequent vomiting
  • Poor weight gain
  • Persistent irritability
  • Regurgitation
  • Hematemesis
  • Anemia
  • Persistent cough
  • Recurrent ear infections

“The incidence of GERD in infancy has been estimated at approximately 18% and becomes more common as children become older. One possibly for this may be due to the ability of the older patient to report symptoms more accurately.”

chiropractic and acid reflux

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat acid reflux. In our chiropractic office we look to see if nerve disturbance is present in the spinal column. At times, infants and children have stress and tension on the nerves that supply the esophagus and stomach. If these nerves are under increased stress and tension, the function of the nerves typically decreases. A trained chiropractor will find the area of the spine with stress (misalignment), and gently adjust the vertebrae. This adjustment increases the function of the nerve system. The nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body. When the body and nervous system are functioning at its most optimal level, typically there is a reduction of symptoms.Even though more research is needed in one case study a 3 month old with medically-diagnosed GERD was treated with chiropractic adjustments and craniosacral therapy. After four patient visits consisting of the chiropractic adjustment and craniosacral therapy symptoms of GERD were significantly decreased and patient exhibited total resolution of symptoms within approximately three months of care. This case study demonstrates infants and children suffering from acid reflux (GERD) may benefit from chiropractic care.

add/adhd

Chiropractic care is not a treatment for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). What we do know is many parents have seen incredible results and changes when their son or daughter have been under chiropractic care.

common symptoms

According to helpguide.org, children with ADD/ADHD may be:

  • Inattentive, but not hyperactive or impulsive
  • Hyperactive and impulsive, but able to pay attention
  • Inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive (the most common form of ADD/ADHD)

statistics

ADD/ADHD cases are on the rise and continues to rise. Why? Why are our children getting sicker and sicker? Why have we seen an average rise of 3% per year of children diagnosed with ADHD? According to the CDC:

  • Approximately 11% of children 4-17 years of age (6.4 million) have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011
  • The percentage of children with an ADHD diagnosis continues to increase, from 7.8% in 2003 to 9.5% in 2007 and to 11.0% in 2011
  • Rates of ADHD diagnosis increased an average of 3% per year from 1997 to 2006 and an average of approximately 5% per year from 2003 to 2011

asthma and allergies

Chiropractic care does not treat asthma and allergies. So, why is it that many patients see improvements after getting adjusted? Some research shows there is a connection between the spinal column, nervous system, immune system, and respiratory tract.

stats

The American Academy of Asthma, Allergies, and Immunology (AAAAI) showed 1 in 10 kids are diagnosed with asthma costing the nation $50 billion per year (3,300 per person per year)! In 2012, 9% or 6.6 million children reported hay fever in the past 12 months. Wow, why are our kids so sick? We are here to help you understand the body and the possibilities of why it is responding with asthma and allergies.

Understanding Allergies

According to AAAAI, allergies are one of the most chronic conditions worldwide. Allergies occur when the immune system reacts excessively to an allergen (substance seen as harmful to the immune system which in most cases are not damaging). When the immune system overreacts, it creates an influx of the Immunoglobulin E antigen (IgE). IgE causes other cells to release histamine thus causing an allergic reaction. Common symptoms of allergies include:

  • Running nose
  • Sneezing
  • Watering eyes
  • Swelling
  • Anaphylactic Shock (serious cases and more rare)

chiropractic care

In our chiropractic office we look to see if nerve disturbance is present in the spinal column. At times, patients with asthma and allergies have stress and tension on the nerves related to the respiratory and immune system. If these nerves have disturbance, the function of the nerves typically decreases. A trained chiropractor will find where the stress is on the nervous system (if any) and remove it so nerves can function more optimally.

athletics

Why have athletes such as Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Michael Jordan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger utilized chiropractic during their professional athletic careers? Many professional, amateur, and now high school sports players and younger are using chiropractic to naturally enhance their overall athletic performance and prevent injury.

Chiropractic care plays a large role in the function of the neuromuscular system. When these systems are in sync, the body will function more optimally. Athletes within our office have noticed the following benefits of chiropractic care:

  • Increased strength
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased range of motion
  • Increased energy and overall attitude
  • Decreased recovery time

autism (autism spectrum disorder)

Chiropractic care is not a treatment for autism. Because autism is seen as a neurological disorder and chiropractic helps decrease nerve disturbance, many have found chiropractic care to be a beneficial tool for their child who has been diagnosed with autism.

stats

Autism is becoming radically more and more common. The CDC stated that in the year 1/168 children were diagnosed. In 2010 the CDC stats show 1/68 children are diagnosed with Autism. Today, statistics show 1/50 children are diagnosed with autism and continuing to rise. Why? Why are our children getting sicker and sicker?

economic costs

It is estimated to cost at least $17,000 more per year to care for a child with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) compared to a child without ASD. Costs include health care, special education, ASD-related therapy, family-coordinated services, and caregiver time. For a child with more severe ASD, costs per year increase to over $21,000. Taken together, it is estimated that total societal costs of caring for children with ASD were over $9 billion in 2011.

chiropractic care and autism

In our chiropractic office we look at the body as a whole. We do not treat autism. We believe the expression of autism is a series of stressors which causes our kids to be sick. We call the stressors the “3 T’s” toxins, traumas, and thoughts. In our office we look at all the factors that could be contributing and causing your child to express neurological challenges and have seen great outcomes. We understand autism is not a simple or easy diagnosis to understand. We are here to help you understand why your child is expressing autism.

bedwetting

Soggy sheets? An embarrassed child? No sleepovers? Bedwetting also known as nocturnal enuresis can be embarrassing for the child, and cause extra laundry and frustration for Mom and Dad. Medical treatments for bedwetting include:  bed-wetting alarms, bladder training, and medicines. However, more parents are now turning to chiropractic adjustments for help.

Research: “…50% or more reduction in the wet night frequency…”

Results: “...25% of the treatment-group (adjusted children) children had 50% or more reduction in the wet night frequency from baseline to post-treatment while none among the control group had such reduction.”

neurology

Neurologically the bladder and urinary tract have a nerve supply from the lower thoracic region and below. Nerve disturbance or stress on the nerves to any part of the urinary tract could decrease the function of that nerve. Because the bladder and all the parts of the urinary tract depend on nerve impulses to function, any stress or disturbance could cause a malfunction. Chiropractors do not treat bedwetting. With a thorough examination, trained chiropractors are able to locate and correct nerve disturbance thus allowing systems and organs of the body to function more optimally, including the urinary tract.

colic

As you are reading this you might be bouncing your baby or just switching to a new formula. You have tried noise machines and medications with countless waking hours of crying. You just want to help your sweet little one, get some sleep, and have an hour or two of silence.

cause?

Indigestion was first thought to be the cause of infantile colic. It is now defined as, “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.” Research is non-conclusive in the root cause of colic.

some research

A research article published in 1999 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics in a randomized controlled trial had a small group of 50 infants who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for infantile colic. One group was treated with adjustments for 2 weeks and the other with the drug dimethicone for 2 weeks. The results showed spinal manipulation (adjustments) reduced crying by 67% and the drug therapy saw a 38% reduction.

chiropractic care

Chiropractic care helps to reduce nerve disturbance and restore normal function. Chiropractic is not a treatment for colic. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the body start at the brainstem, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae. Vertebral subluxations of the neck may compromise the function of the nerve signals. By restoring proper nerve function, the body is able to heal and be restored to its healthy state. When the body is balanced and working properly, colic will not occur.

constipation

Stomach pains? Fussy infant or child? Bloated? Embarrassed? Bowel movements or the number of times your child is pooping may not be fun to talk about but it is important and we are here to help.

reduce nerve disturbance

Sometimes patients with constipation have nerve disturbance, tension, and stress. Chiropractic care does not treat constipation. It helps to reduce nerve disturbance and restore normal function. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the digestive system start at the brainstem, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae mostly in the low back and pelvis. Misalignments of the bones of the low back may compromise the function of the nerve signals to and from the digestive tract. This compromise can affect the child’s or adult’s digestive tract from functioning at its most optimal level. We do not treat constipation. Simply, we as chiropractors check to see if the bones in the low back and pelvis are properly aligned. If the bones are misaligned causing nerve disturbance, we gently reduce it with safe chiropractic adjustments. For infants or small children, an adjustment would be done with light touch of our fingertips in the right direction and place. Many patient have seen great results in the reduction of symptoms after chiropractic care.

Understanding Allergies

According to AAAAI, allergies are one of the most chronic conditions worldwide. Allergies occur when the immune system reacts excessively to an allergen (substance seen as harmful to the immune system which in most cases are not damaging). ear infections

Otitis Media (a middle ear infection) is any inflammation of the middle ear. Ear Infections are the most common childhood illness treated by pediatricians.

common treatments

  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics are useful for infections caused by bacteria. However, most ear infections are viral where the antibiotics becomes useless.
  • Ear tubes are inserted through an outpatient surgical procedure. Using anesthesia, an incision (small hole) in the eardrum or tympanic membrane is made where an artificial tube is placed within the ear canal.

chiropractic care

Chiropractic care helps to reduce nerve disturbance and restore normal function. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the ear start at the brainstem, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae in the neck. Misalignments of the bones of the neck may compromise the function of the nerve signals to and from the ear. This compromise can affect the child’s ear from fighting off infection and impair drainage. We do not treat infections of any type. Simply, we as chiropractors check to see if the bones in the neck are properly aligned. If the bones are misaligned causing nerve disturbance, we gently reduce it with safe chiropractic adjustments.  For infants or small children, an adjustment would be done with light touch of our fingertips in the right direction and place.

headaches

Trouble concentrating at work? Throbbing pain? Discomfort while sitting or lying down? Missed work or school days? Headaches are no fun, we get it. We are here to help.Common treatments for headaches include over the counter medications and prescription drugs. Headaches can be caused by a multitude of stressors. If you are looking to a natural non-drug approach to help your body function more optimally, chiropractic may be for you.

research

Chiropractic is not a treatment for headaches or migraines. Some research does support chiropractic care and its relationship to headaches and migraines.

One study supports spinal manipulations (chiropractic adjustments) and the decreased need for the over the counter medication in patients suffering from tension headaches.

One study compared the effectiveness of spinal manipulation and pharmaceutical treatment for the treatment of tension headaches. “The results of this study show that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches.”

“…use of medication was reduced by 94%”In a study done with patients suffering from migraine headaches, the “average frequency of episodes (migraines) was reduced on average by 90%, duration of each episode by 38%, and use of medication was reduced by 94%. In addition, several associated symptoms were substantially reduced, including nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia.”

infants and children

Taking care of the next generation is Total Family Chiropractic’s mission. What better way to impact our future generation than by working with infants and children. When many people think of chiropractic, they think of low back, neck, and headache relief. Chiropractic is great for adults suffering from those types of symptoms, however, in our office infants and children have benefited tremendously from chiropractic care.

After a thorough consultation and examination, we safely and gently uses chiropractic adjustments to optimize function. Common infant and childhood illness seen in our office include: trauma related to birth, ear infections, colic, ADD/ADHD, autism, allergies & asthma, latching difficulties, acid reflux, bedwetting, constipation, and malformations of the cranium.

chiropractic and children

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat any of these illnesses or symptoms. Chiropractic care helps to reduce nerve disturbance and restore normal function. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the body start at the brainstem, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae. Misalignments of the bones of the spine may compromise the function of the nerve signals to and from the child’s body. This compromise can prevent the child’s body from functioning properly. Many times when the body is unable to adapt to stress, symptoms and illnesses occur. The adjustments help to restore proper function within the body. This allows the body to appropriately adapt to stress thus functioning more optimally.

PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)

It is estimated that 85% of menstruating women have at least 1 PMS symptom during the month of their cycle – 20% experiencing severe symptoms. If you suffer from Premenstrual Syndrome and are looking to find a natural non-drug approach, chiropractic care may be for you.

the nervous system

The nervous system is the master system of the whole body. It includes the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves branching off from the spinal cord. The nervous system sends signals to all the tissues, organs, glands, and systems in the body. Stress on any of the nerves can cause them to dysfunction. Stress on the nerves specifically supplying the reproductive organ systems and the hormone system can cause them to decrease in function. Chiropractors are trained to find where the stress and tension are on your spine and correct it creating a more ideal environment for your body.

chiropractic and pms

Although chiropractic care is not a treatment for PMS (or any other condition) many women have seen improvement in overall reproductive health while under chiropractic care.

pregnancy

Taking care of the next generation is Total Family Chiropractic’s mission. What better way to impact our future generation then by working with pregnant mothers?

pregnancy and chiropractic care

At Total Family Chiropractic, we understand the importance of a healthy pregnancy. The function of the nerve system and spinal column is needed to create a viable environment for baby while still placing a high priority on mom’s well-being.

Pelvic pain? Low back pain? Sciatic nerve issues? Breech position?

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat these symptoms, rather chiropractic adjustments create balance in the nervous system. When moms have a high functioning nervous system and better managed stress, their bodies are able to adapt to the changes occurring throughout pregnancy. Dramatic physical, mental, and emotional changes throughout pregnancy can cause increased spinal column and nervous system stress. A well trained chiropractor will find where the spine has increased nerve disturbance (stress) and correct it, allowing the nervous system to function more optimally. A well balance spinal column typically doesn’t have symptoms.

webster technique

The Webster technique is a technique used by chiropractors to reduce the tension and torsion in the uterus which could ultimately affect progression of labor, optimal fetal positioning, and a natural pregnancy and birth.

research

Even though the scarcity of published literature warrants further research, listed are some research articles on pregnancy and chiropractic.

Possible less back pain during labor

A group of women treated with manipulative techniques (chiropractic adjustments) experienced less back pain during labor.

sciatica

Got a pain in the butt…literally? Chiropractic care is not a treatment for sciatica. Sciatic pain starts mostly in the low back or buttocks region and in severe cases can travel down to the back of the knee and heel. Sciatic pain is mostly due to stress and tension on the nerves. When there is stress on nerves exiting the spine, numbness, tingling, and/or a sharp shooting sensation may be felt. This tension creates a decrease in function of the nerve.

Chiropractic care helps to increase the function of the spine and nervous system. By removing stress and tension from the spine, the nervous system ultimately functions more optimally. Many patients have seen great outcomes after chiropractic care.

sensory processing disorder

“Sensory processing (sometimes called ‘sensory integration’ or SI) is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses.” – Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation

We perceive and live our life through our senses; including touching, smelling, hearing, seeing, tasting, balance, and proprioception. Your nerves in your ears, eyes, nose, tongue, and skin are constantly sending message to your brain telling it what is going on in the world. For example, if you touched a hot pan, the nerves in your fingers send a signal up to your brain. The brain senses the hot sensation as dangerous and painful and in milliseconds your hand is removed from the hot pan. This is your sensory nervous system working and responding correctly. Another example would be your ability to taste a sour lemon or a sweet piece of chocolate. When these messages are sent on a clear and high functioning nervous system, the body will respond appropriately. For example, you will remove your hand from the hot pan.

Sometimes the communication highway (nervous system) is obstructed or unclear and does not function properly. The challenge with children or adults suffering from sensory processing disorder is that their “highway” (nervous system) is bumpy and full of traffic. Many times children or patients with SPD are over or under responding to senses. When this occurs there is a disconnect between the brain and body.

chiropractic and spd

Chiropractic care helps to reduce nerve disturbance and restore normal function. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the sensory organs and tissues, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae. Misalignments of the bones of the spine may compromise the function of the nerve signals to and from the body. This compromise can affect the child’s ability to properly sense his or her environment. We do not treat SPD. We as chiropractors simply check to see if the bones in the spine are properly aligned. If the bones are misaligned causing nerve disturbance, we gently reduce it with chiropractic adjustments. This create increased balance in the nervous system.
